One of Norwich’s best-loved department stores has become the latest company to sign up to the nook business network.
Jarrold is the 39th member of an ever-growing corporate group that exists to support East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), specifically the charity’s nook appeal.
The twice-UK Independent Department Store of the Year has pledged to raise £10,000 for the appeal, that was launched in November 2014 to raise £10 million for a new, purpose-built children’s hospice in Framingham Earl.
Jarrold has chosen the good cause as one of three to give its backing until 2020, with the other lucky beneficiaries being Big C and the Prince’s Trust.
The store plans to award money from its carrier bag sales and host a fashion show among its fundraising activities.
Carole Slaughter, Jarrold Charity Coordinator, said: “Jarrold has been a supporter of EACH for many years and is delighted to now become a member of the nook business network, with a pledge to raise £10,000 towards the new, purpose-built children’s hospice for Norfolk.
“The monies will be raised by Jarrold staff and customers through a variety of activities over the coming months as part of the Jarrold 250 Fundraising Initiative.”
Sophie Mayes, EACH Norfolk Corporate Fundraiser, said: “We’re really excited to be working with such a popular store as Jarrold and can’t wait to see what staff get up to in order to fulfil their pledge.
“Foundations for our new hospice were dug out in November after the nook appeal hit £7 million, so we’re edging ever closer to making our vision for improved children’s palliative care in Norfolk a reality. We will need continued support to raise the final £3 million, though, so it’s fantastic news that Jarrold is joining our business network.”
The nook business network sees companies committing to raise either £10,000, £15,000 or £25,000 in exchange for various benefits and support.

Join RAF Marham aircraft technician in running a marathon for EACH
An aircraft technician at RAF Marham is encouraging people to join him in running 26.2 miles for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
Ryan Green, 25, will be taking on the London Marathon on 22 April and as part of his fundraising is asking supporters to run the same distance over the course of the month. Anyone who completes the challenge will receive a bespoke EACH medal.
“I’ve not set myself a target of how much I hope to raise,” said Ryan. “All I can say is that I’m doing everything I possibly can to raise as much money as possible for this worthy cause.
“I’m currently holding a similar challenge this month in aid of the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund and I’ve raised over £600.”
Ryan is no stranger to fundraising, having helped his former squadron at RAF Lossiemouth collect £16,000 in a year.
He knows about EACH as a school pantomime he performed in years ago benefited the good cause.
“EACH is an inspiring local charity. Everyone I’ve ever spoken to about it has nothing but kind words for the amazing work EACH does for children, young people and their families. It’s truly an honour that I can give something back to a charity that’s provided so many people with help and support when they needed it most.”
Ryan lives in Ipswich with mum Samantha, Headteacher of The Willows Primary School, dad Len, a web developer, and brother Lewis, a historian.
He is currently following a 15-week training programme that consists of four runs a week and hopes to complete the London Marathon in 4hrs 30mins.
Ryan explained: “I took up running in May 2017 when I realised I needed to do a little bit more with my life than just playing Xbox. On the night I decided I needed change, I signed up for my first 10k race and ran it a week later – and found I wasn’t too bad! Not speedy, but I was happy plodding along.
“I’m now a member of the RAF Triathlon Association and have competed in two duathlons representing the RAF. I haven’t quite stretched to a triathlon yet, but I’ve foolishly signed up for an Ironamn event in 2019 – a triathlon consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and finally a full marathon!”

EACH cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Suffolk, as well as Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk, and supports their families.
Ryan is one of four runners with an EACH marathon place and will be joined in competing for the charity by others who obtained spots in the public ballot.
