Strumpshaw Steam Museum

Strumpshaw Steam Museum is located in the grounds of Strumpshaw Hall and is renowned for hosting steam rallies. A must-see for steam aficionados, Strumpshaw Steam Museum has a collection of machines including older tractors, steam engines, beam engines, a narrow gauge railway, mechanical organs and memorabilia.

Parent’s view:-
Strumpshaw Steam museum’s collection is housed in a large warehouse on the Strumpshaw Hall estate. With no suggested order to viewing the exhibits we resorted to going clockwise as best as we could, and I think was probably the best way to do it.

Unfortunately we went on a week day, which meant the only things we could see was the items inside the museum warehouse. The boys really wanted to go on the train, so we’ll probably go back another time.

In the museum there is a mixture of steam driven mechanisms, and lots of old nostalgia memorabilia. I noticed they are restoring a fairground ride and if this becomes a ride-on feature it will be a really good addition.

The boys enjoyed sitting down and watching the mechanical organs, and they would’ve spent a while on the arcade coin-push game if I carried more coins in my pocket!

Field notes
The train only runs on Sundays or special days, so check before you travel.

If you have young kids and you’re going on a day when there is no train then you probably only need to allocate one hour (two max), longer if you’re stopping to eat.
