Golf group raises £1,100 for good causes, including EACH’s nook appeal

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has received £550 towards its nook appeal courtesy of a new and rapidly expanding Norfolk golf group.

The Railway Tavern Golf Society, based in Poringland, was established in March this year and already has 48 members.

It recently held a golf day at Barnham Broom, in which 34 players took part and raised £1,100 to be split equally between the nook appeal and Meadowgreen Dog Rescue Centre.

Adrian Ewing, Secretary, said: “The nook appeal’s raising funds to complete EACH’s new hospice being built just round the corner from the pub, so we wanted to support that.

“The second beneficiary, Meadowgreen Dog Rescue Centre, in Hales, was the call of our captain, John Glen, a massive dog lover! It’s privately-owned and non-charity funded, and has been established for 15 years. Last year they rehomed over 100 dogs and have 42 kennels that are full most of the time. We’re delighted we can help.”

Roy Grage of the nook friends group said: “We set up three years ago, with a target to raise £10,000 each year towards the building of the new hospice. To date, we’ve raised £90,000, only achieved with the support of people living in Poringland and the surrounding villages.”

Cherie Williams, on behalf of Meadowgreen, said: “The money raised will go towards our vet fund that will be used for treatment and any operations needed for the stray and abandoned dogs in our care. This fantastic sum will make a huge difference to us.”

Sophie Mayes, EACH Norfolk Corporate Fundraiser, said: “We’re obviously delighted Athena Games have thought about us in planning of their fifth birthday celebrations.

“The nook appeal is now over £8 million, so we’re heading towards the final stretch of fundraising and need one last push from all our fantastic supporters across Norfolk. Thanks in advance to everyone who takes part in Athena’s activities. We hope you have a great time!”
