Wroxham Barns Spring update part 1

We’ve called this our spring update because of the presence of fluffy cuddly lambs, but really this visit took place whilst Norfolk was in the grip of winter.

We’ve split it in to 2 sections too, but we will also add another to focus on the craft section in the future.

Wroxham Barns Spring update part 1 – lambs, barns and pig stys too

On a frosty winter’s day we rolled up at Wroxham Barns (near Wroxham and Hoveton, North Norfolk) looking forward to seeing and feeding the lambs. But, of course, at Wroxham Barns there’s so much more to see!

We were the first customers to arrive at the farm, and we soon discovered an interesting twist to our visit. It was so cold that the pipes were frozen – in fact pretty much everything was frozen!

We think this sign (which was inside a barn) helps to get the message over – it was FREEZING!

The pond was also frozen over, but this didn’t stop swans, ducks and geese from trying to swim on it!

Junior Barns – Feeding the Lambs
Little lambs don’t like the cold any more than we do! Luckily they’re nice and snug in their barn, with loads of straw bedding and heat lamps which they sat under.

When it’s time to feed them all the children sit down on a row of straw bales and the lambs are brought over, 5 at a time.

If you’ve never fed a lamb before you won’t know how powerful they are. So, if you have a small child holding the bottle it’s wise to give them a hand!

Our seven year old is a bit jumpy near animals at the best of times so when an enthusiastic lamb started tugging at the bottle teat he pulled it out of the lambs’ reach! Poor little lamb decided to muscle in on his neighbours’ bottle, so our little 4 year old then had two hungry fluffy lambs nuzzling for his bottle!

As well as lambs, what other animal youngsters would you expect to see coming up to spring? Yep, little chicks, and Wroxham Barns had some little ones that you could hold. Unfortunately we missed that because our boys were too busy talking to the donkeys, so when we arrived at the Small Animal Nursery they were just being put back under their heat lamps to make them nice and toasty.

We also met some Guinea Pigs in the Junior Barn Small Animal Nursery and the children sat on a bench so that the Guinea Pigs could be placed on their laps. The kids loved this, just sitting their stroking their Guinea Pigs. Quite therapeutic!
