Members of the Norfolk Lord’s Taverners, Lady Taverners and Fakenham Golf Club Seniors were in Norwich this weekend to present a new sports wheelchair to Rhiannan Webb of the Norwich Low Riders who are Norfolk’s Wheelchair basket ball team.
The new wheelchair was donated by members of The Fakenham Golf Club Seniors who raised funds through a charity golf competition as well as collections at their competitions and matches against other Norfolk clubs throughout 2017.
Norfolk Schoolgirl Rhiannan said “I love the new wheelchair which will allow me to be more included in sports that cannot be accessed without a chair and to take part in more Physical education lessons and out of School Club’s.”
The Lord’s Taverners supply sports wheelchairs to individuals who require a starter chair or a bespoke chair for more advanced players under the age of 25. Clubs can apply for up to five multi-sports wheelchairs to enable youngsters to try out a sport before committing to purchasing their own wheelchair.
“We were delighted to provide this Chair to Rhiannan and we all hope it gives her lots of pleasure”. said Peter Hopkinson, Captain of The Fakenham Golf Club Seniors who arranged the fundraising.
Norfolk Regional Chairman of the Lord’s Taverners, Gary Towers, said: “The Lord’s Taverners believe that sport and recreation are essential for all young people, regardless of ability or background. The sports wheelchairs that we provide are essential for allowing disabled youngsters access to sport.
“We are proud to have presented 14 new sports wheelchairs to the Norwich Low Riders over the last few years to enable even more young people to enjoy the game and all the additional benefits playing sports brings. We very much appreciate Fakenham Golf Club Seniors generous sponsorship of this latest wheelchair for Rhiannan.”
The Lord’s Taverners, the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, will donate over £4 million this year to help give disadvantaged and disabled young people a sporting chance. Over the past 10 years the charity has donated over 1,200 sports wheelchairs to clubs and individuals enabling increased opportunities for disabled young people to participate in a range of wheelchair sports every year. Apart from wheelchair basketball these wheelchairs are also used for Wheelchair Rugby, Archery and Boccia- a form of bowls and tennis.
